€1 Billion Needed for School Infrastructure in Cyprus, State Funds at €35 Million

The needs for school infrastructure in Cyprus are estimated at €1 billion, while state funds allocated for 2024 amount to €35 million, according to Andreas Maragkos, head of the Technical Services Department of the Ministry of Education. Mr. Maragkos presented the situation to the Parliamentary Education Committee, emphasizing that the implementation of projects depends on the approval of the development budget. He pointed out that 78 schools are pending seismic upgrades, while construction costs are rising rapidly in recent years. Problems also arise from decisions for temporary solutions, such as the use of prefabricated classrooms, which complicate plans for the construction of new buildings. The President of the Nicosia School Board, Nikos Megalos, mentioned that school boards need at least €500,000 to €1 million annually for maintenance alone. It was also noted that the budget for school infrastructure has been increasing in recent years, but remains lower than in 2011.
