€1bn needs for school infrastructure, €35m state funds

The needs for school infrastructure are estimated at €1 billion, while state funds amount to €35 million. This emerged from a discussion in the Parliamentary Education Committee, where it was stated that planning exists, but the implementation of projects depends on the approval of the budget by the Ministry of Finance. It was also noted that the seismic upgrade of 730 school buildings has not been completed, while construction costs are constantly increasing. In addition, difficulties arising from political decisions were highlighted, such as the expansion of pre-primary education. School boards report needs for maintenance ranging from €500,000 to €1 million depending on their size, as well as increased needs for upgrades of basic infrastructure, such as toilets. Finally, it was found that the budget for school infrastructure is lower today compared to 2011.
