EU Commission to Adopt Schengen Report for Cyprus This Spring

The European Commission is expected to adopt the Schengen evaluation report for Cyprus this Spring, potentially paving the way for the country's inclusion in the Schengen area. European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated that Cyprus has made significant progress in meeting the technical requirements, making the decision now a political one. The Commission fully supports Cyprus's efforts and is working closely with its authorities to achieve this goal. Mr. Brunner emphasized the importance of Schengen for freedom of movement, tourism, and trade within the EU. The adoption of the report will leave the unanimous decision for Cyprus's inclusion to the Council. Concurrently, the EU is preparing for the full implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact in June 2026. Mr. Brunner noted that illegal border crossings have decreased by more than half compared to 2023, attributed to the implementation of the Pact and the adoption of new measures. The Commission is working closely with all member states to ensure uniform implementation, providing technical, operational, and financial support. Cyprus, like other member states, faces different challenges, but there is strong commitment to implementing the Pact.
