Cyprus: Committee Calls for Laws to Address Turkish Company Activity

The Parliamentary Committee on Control is calling for the urgent promotion of legislation to address the activity of companies with Turkish interests or other countries that may conflict with the interests of the Republic of Cyprus. The discussion began with concerns about the growing number of companies with Turkish interests legally registered in Cyprus and the risk of gradually acquiring real estate in the occupied territories. The Ministry of Commerce, Energy and Industry announced that a bill is being prepared to give the Registrar of Companies the power to reject the registration of companies for reasons of national interest. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed coordination with relevant services to address the issue. The Department of Lands and Surveys is working on amendments to the legislation on the acquisition of real estate by foreigners, setting clear criteria for purchase. It confirmed that it has not identified any such companies as having acquired real estate, but requires approval from the District Officer for each application from foreign legal entities. The discussion focused on the need for preventive measures to prevent the legal transfer of real estate to the occupied territories and to strengthen the control of companies operating in Cyprus.
