Commissioner of Administration Criticizes MEP's Remarks on People with Intellectual Disabilities

The Commissioner of Administration and Protection of Human Rights, Maria Stilianou Lottidi, strongly criticized a Member of the European Parliament's statement regarding people with intellectual disabilities, describing it as an expression of outdated perceptions. The Commissioner emphasized that the problem is not only the statement itself, but the underlying belief it reveals about people with disabilities, which hinders their full inclusion in society. She recalled the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which defines disability as a result of the interaction between impairments and barriers. Ms. Lottidi stressed that dismissive language from people in power can undermine the values of equality and respect for human rights, and that citizens' behavior reflects the level of culture and understanding.
