May 24th: Commemoration of Saint Meletius the Strategist and a Host of Martyrs

Today, Saturday, May 24th, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Meletius the Strategist and a host of martyrs who gave their lives for Christ during the persecutions of the Roman Emperor Heliogabalus. Saint Meletius, along with John and Stephen, refused to renounce their faith, endured terrible tortures, and were ultimately martyred. Their martyrdom led to the faith of Serapion and Callinicus, who also died for Christ. Many others followed, including officials of the Roman administration, women, and children, totaling eleven thousand two hundred and eight martyrs. The story of these martyrs serves as an example of faith and sacrifice for Christians. Their faith spread rapidly, bringing many people closer to Christ. Those named Marciana, Palladia, Photini, Christianos, and Christiani celebrate their name day today.
