Saint Philothea of Athens Celebrated Today

Today, February 19th, the Church commemorates Saint Philothea of Athens. Saint Philothea was born in Athens in 1522 to devout parents, Angelos and Syriga Benizelos. Her mother, after years of prayer, miraculously conceived Philothea, as she was barren. Saint Philothea received a good education and was raised with Christian values. Despite her wishes, her parents arranged her marriage at the age of 14. After the death of her parents and husband, she followed her heart's desire and dedicated herself to God, taking monastic vows and becoming known as Philothea. Following a vision of Saint Andrew the First-Called, she founded a women's monastery, which she endowed with properties to ensure its self-sufficiency. Saint Philothea dedicated her life to faith and service, creating a center of spirituality and philanthropy. Her memory is honored by the Church and serves as an example of faith, obedience, and devotion to God. Today, those named Philothea, Rigoula, or Paraskevi celebrate their name day, honoring the memory of Saint Philothea of Athens and her life example.
