Saint Theodore the Tyro: Celebration on February 17th

Today, February 17th, the Church commemorates Saint Theodore the Tyro, Saints Marcian and Pulcheria, and Saint Theodore of Byzantium. Those celebrating their name day are Theodore, Theodoros, Theo, Theodora, Dora, Thodora, Douroula, Nora, Pulcheria, Pulcherina, Pulcheritsa, Pulchero, and Pulcheri. Saint Theodore the Tyro, originally from Amaseia in Pontus, lived in the 3rd century AD and was martyred for his faith in Christ, refusing to sacrifice to idols. He was denounced as a Christian and, despite pressure, remained steadfast in his belief, even destroying a temple of idols. According to tradition, Saint Theodore endured terrible tortures, was thrown into a fiery furnace, and ultimately died a martyr's death. His memory is honored by the Church through various forms of iconography, usually depicted in military uniform, either alone or facing a snake-dragon. The feast of Saint Theodore the Tyro is important for the faithful and is a day of prayer and honor to the Saint, who is considered the protector of soldiers and athletes.
