Cat Disappearances: Complaint to the EU Considered – Animal Welfare Groups Demand Answers from Police

Volunteers and animal welfare groups in Cyprus are expressing strong concerns and protests regarding the disappearance of cats from various areas, with criticism directed towards the Police for their handling of the case involving the abduction of cats from a supermarket parking lot in Latsia. The initial complaint was filed on January 25, 2026, when three sterilized cats vanished from the area where they were cared for by volunteers. According to reports, a woman allegedly trapped the cats and transported them in her vehicle, claiming they were sick and she took them to a veterinarian, without naming the clinic. The Police initially accepted the woman's claims without further investigation, which angered the volunteers. Following pressure and publicity, the Police began reviewing security footage from the supermarket and identified the suspect, who was summoned for questioning. Simultaneously, there are other reports about the same woman, who is said to be capturing cats from various locations. The Police state that the case is under investigation and are considering the possibility of a single individual or a wider network being involved. However, the fate of the cats allegedly removed remains unknown. Other rescuers and animal welfare organizations report similar cat disappearances, expressing disappointment with the lack of information and action from the authorities. Due to the concern and lack of effective investigation, animal welfare groups are considering filing a complaint with the European Union, seeking intervention to protect animals and ensure transparency and effectiveness in investigations.
