Cyprus Faces Power Shortage Risk as Unions Sound Alarm

Cyprus is facing an increasing risk of power shortages, with unions of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) raising the alarm. The cause is the delay in replacing old power generation units and the lack of investment in renewable energy sources by the EAC itself. The unions accuse the government and relevant ministries (Finance, Commerce) as well as RAEK of negligence, which have delayed approval and funding procedures. Furthermore, the EAC's attempt to invest in renewable energy sources has been hindered, resulting in Cyprus missing opportunities to reduce energy costs for consumers. Instead, private companies have received licenses to build renewable energy parks, but they have not been implemented, leading to license trading. Another important issue is the delay in awarding a tender for the installation of energy storage systems on the networks, despite the exemption Cyprus has received from the European Union. This delay could lead to power outages. The EAC unions warn that if immediate action is not taken, Cyprus will face serious problems with electricity and water supply, with the possibility of blackouts. The activation of Cyta in the energy sector is considered by the unions as another blow to the EAC and Cyprus's energy independence.
