Former Cyprus FA President Facing 25 Charges of Potential Conflict of Interest and Money Laundering

Former President of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA), Giorgos Koumas, will appear in court on February 26, 2026, following an indictment against him. The indictment includes 25 charges of potential conflict of interest and money laundering from illegal activities, spanning the period 2015-2025. The charges relate to collaborations with companies and organizations involved in sports, such as the CFA, the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority, Cablenet, GO PLC, the Nicosia Race Club, and the Cyprus Basketball Federation (CBF). According to the indictment, Mr. Koumas, during his tenure at the CFA, allegedly maintained connections with specific organizations through companies and partners, violating the Law on Combating Manipulation of Sports Events and Article 20 of the Penal Code. These actions included the production and broadcasting of sporting events, the management of television rights, and the exploitation of internet and mobile rights for various sports. Furthermore, charges 24 and 25 concern offenses of money laundering from illegal activities, with the total amount in question reaching approximately 6.5 million euros. This amount is allegedly derived from the activities described in the previous charges. The defendants are Giorgos Koumas, as well as two companies under his control. The first hearing is expected to be scheduled at a later date, as the defense is expected to request an adjournment to study the evidence. The case is expected to shed light on potential irregularities and improprieties in the management of the CFA and its collaborations with various organizations.
