Impressive Inflow to Dams: Rainfall Boosts Water Levels, Second Dam Overflows

Published February 16, 2026, 09:27

Recent rainfall has led to an impressive inflow of water into Cyprus' dams, reaching 9,200 million cubic meters. This has resulted in an increase in the overall dam capacity by 3.4%, from 13.8% to 17.2%. However, the total amount of water in the dams remains lower compared to the same period last year. Specifically, the total amount of water is 50,027 million cubic meters, while the total dam capacity is 290,804 million cubic meters. Last year at this time, the total amount was 75,434 million cubic meters. This indicates that, despite the recent improvement, the situation remains critical. The Kouris dam, the largest in Cyprus, has a capacity of 14.5%, while last year it was at 21.5%. The Asprokremmos dam, the second largest, has a capacity of 18.0%, while last year it was at 27.5%. In contrast, the Kalopanagiotis and Pomos dams are full (100%), compared to 76.0% and 37.6% respectively last year. Despite the increase in capacity, the situation of the dams remains worrying, as the total amount of water is significantly lower than last year. Continued rainfall is essential to improve the situation and ensure adequate water supply during the summer.
