Rare Black Flamingo Spotted in Cyprus

A rare black flamingo has been spotted at the Larnaca Salt Lake, exciting birdwatchers. The black flamingo is an extremely rare color variation, due to a biological peculiarity known as melanism, where the organism produces an excessive amount of melanin. A similar individual was observed in Cyprus in 2015, as well as in Israel in 2014, suggesting it is the same bird migrating in the eastern Mediterranean. Flamingos are usually pink in color due to their diet, but this rare variation offers a unique sight.
