Gaps Identified in Tax Reform - Clarifications and Potential Changes

The Parliamentary Committee on Finance examined the new tax reform with the Commissioner of Taxation, Sotiris Markidis, requesting clarifications and potential changes in areas where gaps emerged during implementation. Mr. Markidis assured that the majority of taxpayers will see a reduction in income tax due to the increased tax-free threshold and more favorable brackets. One of the first issues discussed was the TF59 form, which, in order to protect personal data, requires taxpayers to calculate the deductions they are entitled to themselves. The Tax Department has already published a detailed guide and is organizing seminars to inform the public. Additionally, an omission was identified in the legislation regarding home renovation loans with interest subsidies, which should be included. The treatment of green investments and tax deductions for the purchase of electric vehicles were also discussed, with the Tax Department proposing reference to the invoicing and purchase dates respectively. Mr. Markidis acknowledged that there are other concerns and a potential need for further changes, but requested time to fully assess the impact of the reform and propose appropriate corrections.
