Aloona Community Leader Seeks Update on Dam Project

The community leader of Alona, Michalis Nikiforou, sent a letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, requesting an update on the progress of the design for the construction of a dam in the Gefyri tis Panagias area. The dam, with a capacity of six million cubic meters, will have a strong enrichment character, retaining winter waters and preventing their loss to the sea. Mr. Nikiforou states that after the recent rains, the Serrachi River is flowing rapidly, resulting in the loss of valuable water quantities. This water ends up in a small dam in the occupied village of Masari and then is lost to the sea, while the communities of northern Pitsilia face restrictions due to water scarcity during the summer months. In addition, the community leader emphasizes that such a dam could contribute to the fire protection of the mountainous area, as it would allow the refueling of firefighting helicopters in the event of a fire. Mr. Nikiforou announced that he will inform all agricultural organizations and community leaders in the area, so that there will be a common position, and warned that if the request does not receive an immediate response, they will proceed with dynamic mobilizations.
