National Plan Activated for Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Cyprus

A national plan to combat foot-and-mouth disease has been activated in Cyprus following confirmed cases in livestock units in the areas of Troulloi, Oroklini, Livadia, and Aradippou. Approximately 14,000 animals (cattle, pigs, and sheep) have been affected, and the process of culling and burial has begun. Strict biosecurity and disinfection measures are also being implemented in the affected areas. A meeting involving the Ministers of Agriculture, Justice, and Defense, as well as representatives of relevant state services, was held at the 'ZEUS' Coordination Center of the CSCC, aiming for operational coordination and strengthening of measures. A Crisis Management Center has been established and is operating 24/7, coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture. The arrival of experts from the European Union for technical support, including the vaccination process, is expected. The coordination team includes the Cyprus Police, the Cyprus Fire Service, the National Guard, Civil Defense, and other relevant services. The authorities emphasize that the priority is to limit cases within the already affected areas and prevent further spread of the disease. Despite the outbreaks, exports of Cypriot products continue normally without restrictions.
