Energy and the Eastern Mediterranean: How Have the Balances Changed?

The 4th International EastMed Energy Forum – Peace Talks was held under the auspices of the Turkish Center for Energy Strategies, Policies and Research (TESPAM). The forum focused on developments in the energy sector in the Eastern Mediterranean, the policies of regional actors and the impact of the Israel-Palestine war. Participants stressed the importance of ensuring energy security in the region, developing cooperation between the two communities in Cyprus and efficiently utilizing available resources. The possibility of creating interconnected energy networks between Europe-Africa and Europe-Asia was also highlighted. Former Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Katroungalos stated that the energy picture in the Eastern Mediterranean is a complex geopolitical puzzle, with different strategies from Greece and Turkey. He pointed out that the creation of a vertical energy corridor becomes commercially important only as long as the war in Ukraine continues. Finally, it was estimated that in the future, small modular nuclear reactors may become more attractive than oil and natural gas, offering a sustainable alternative to meet energy needs.
