Greece: Technical Issue at Athens Airport Causes Flight Delays

A technical issue at Athens International Airport is causing flight delays. Air traffic controllers accuse the Civil Aviation Authority of a recurring problem with communication with Mount Merenda, due to the failure to replace a faulty spare part. This has resulted in Athens Approach operating with one radar instead of three, without backup frequencies. The controllers recall a recent total loss of communication and express concern about the lack of a safety assessment study and operational instructions for traffic management. They point out that the problem is recurring despite assurances from the CAA. They emphasize that the situation is “untenable” and threaten to reduce capacity to protect the public, as well as refuse overtime during the summer season if substantial measures are not taken to upgrade the equipment. Furthermore, they express dissatisfaction with the fact that the associates of the previous Director of the CAA, who bear responsibility for the situation, remain in their positions. The lack of adequate equipment and the delayed replacement of spare parts endanger flight safety.
