Greece: Gas Leak Caused Explosion at Violanta Factory

A gas leak is believed to be the cause of the explosion at the Violanta factory in Trikala, according to initial findings of the investigation. The tragedy resulted in the death of five workers. The factory continues to smoke, and investigations are ongoing. According to reports, the factory had a fire safety study, which was submitted electronically by a qualified engineer in September 2025. The body of the fifth woman, Agapi Bounova, was found near the bodies of the other four workers. The explosion occurred on Monday morning, shortly before 4:00 am, in a wing of the factory. The Fire Department reports that a strong explosion preceded the collapse of part of the factory. Investigations are focusing on the possibility of a propane leak, which, combined with a spark, caused the explosion and fire. The Arson Crime Investigation Department (DAEE) is collecting testimonies from workers who managed to escape, while two experts from Athens have been tasked with investigating the causes of the explosion. The temperature developed by the fire exceeded 1,000 degrees, causing significant damage to the factory's infrastructure.
