Greece: Procedures Launched by Ministry of Culture for Kaisariani Photos - Collector's Statement

The Greek Ministry of Culture has initiated procedures to acquire the historical photographs depicting the 200 executed in Kaisariani, as announced by government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis. The Belgian collector, Tim de Craene, who had posted the photos on eBay, decided to withdraw them following public reaction and acknowledging the sensitivity of the historical material. He stated he remains open to dialogue with Greek authorities regarding the future of the photographs, emphasizing that the final decision regarding their fate will be his, with full awareness of their historical significance. The President of the Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, mentioned that the Parliament has no direct jurisdiction in the matter but will examine the authenticity of the photographs if requested by the Conference of Presidents. He also highlighted the existence of international legislation prohibiting the trade of war relics and that the Parliament will attempt to acquire the photos if there are no legal obstacles. The Unified Union of Employees of the Ministry of Culture of Attica, Sterea and the Islands has requested the leadership of the Ministry of Culture to immediately proceed with the acquisition of the photographs, emphasizing the need to remove them from the auction platform, verify their authenticity, and document and exhibit them publicly. The issue has caused sensitivities and political reactions, with the collector expressing regret for the politicization of the matter and stating his shock at the damage caused to the Kaisariani monument. These developments underscore the importance of protecting historical memory and preserving cultural treasures.
