Controlled Burning to be Implemented by the Forestry Department in Machairas Forest

The Cyprus Forestry Department will begin implementing controlled burning in the Machairas Forest, in the 'Maratheftis' area, on Wednesday, March 18th. The process will be carried out under strict supervision and aims to manage combustible forest material and prevent forest fires. Controlled burning, a practice previously used in Cyprus, is being reintroduced as part of a broader fire protection strategy, based on research and international practices. The implementation will be extended to all forest districts of Cyprus, while Forestry Department officials will receive further training in Spain. This practice is being implemented during a period of increased fire risk due to the accumulation of fuel material.
