EKYSY and Mousiouttas: Discussion on Widow's Pension for Men and Pension System

The Minister of Labour, Marinos Mousiouttas, met with a delegation from the Cyprus Pensioners' Union (EKYSY) to discuss a series of issues affecting pensioners. Main topics of discussion were the upcoming pension reform, widow's pension for men, and the state's debt to the Social Insurance Fund. EKYSY emphasized the need to ensure adequate and dignified pensions for all pensioners and requested the abolition of the 12% penalty for those who retired at 63. A particularly important issue raised was the injustice suffered by widowed men, as the existing legislation divides them into 'lucky' and 'unlucky' depending on the date of their wife's death. EKYSY requested the removal of this injustice, so that all widowed men are entitled to a widow's pension. In addition, issues related to the social card, the need to expedite the pension application review processes, the provision of assistance to the elderly in matters of electronic applications and payments, as well as the problem arising from the operation of the Subsidized Holiday Scheme for pensioners were discussed. EKYSY requested the extension of the benefits of the social card and its timely dispatch to beneficiaries. The Minister of Labour stated that several of the issues are within the framework of the broader discussion on pension reform and pledged to examine the issue of widow's pension for men and to return soon with an update to EKYSY.
