Price Surges in Essential Goods, Declines in Others – A Detailed Look

According to Aliki Iordanou, Head of Competition at the Consumer Protection Service, there are fluctuations in the prices of basic goods. In December, prices increased by 23% compared to November, and by 30% compared to last year. Specifically, increases were recorded in sugar (9.6%), fresh vegetables and greens (23%), fresh and frozen fish (8% and 7.2% respectively), frozen burgers (3%), cheese (2.7%) and processed meats (2.2%). However, Ms. Iordanou emphasized that price decreases were observed in other product categories. Flour decreased by 9.3%, frozen shellfish by 9.3%, oil by 8.6%, baby food by 4.7%, juices by 3.7%, rice by 3.3%, fresh meat by 3.2%, yogurt by 2.9%, vegetable cooking oil by 2.8%, soft drinks by 2.6% and Cypriot coffee by 2.4%. The implementation of e-Kalathi has contributed to containing and reducing prices, and transparency is expected to increase with the publication of the number of people using the platform, after approval by the data protection commissioner. Next month, e-Kalathi will be expanded to include fresh vegetables, fruits, fish and chicken products, offering consumers more options for price comparison.
