A passenger train derailed in Switzerland near Gopenstein, in the canton of Valais, on the morning of Monday, February 16th. Initial reports indicate that approximately 80 people were on board when the train derailed, likely due to an avalanche. Local police announced that injuries are probable and rescue operations have begun. A BLS spokesperson confirmed the train was derailed by an avalanche and that passengers will be evacuated soon. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announced that the line will remain closed until 4 p.m. today. The train had departed from Spiez and was heading towards Brig.
