ECB: Digital Euro Will Cost Banks €4-6 Billion in Four Years

The European Central Bank (ECB) estimates that the introduction of the digital euro will cost banks in the European Union between €4 and €6 billion over four years. The cost includes approximately €1.3 billion for initial setup and €300 million for operating costs. This cost corresponds to about 3% of banks' annual IT spending. The ECB states that banks will be able to recover the cost through fees from merchants for the digital euro services they provide and will not be charged network usage fees by the central bank. The ECB expects the approval of relevant legislation at the EU level and aims to launch the digital euro in 2029, considering it a tool to maintain the role of public money in the digital economy.
