Solidarity Event for Venezuela Held by PEO

The Pan-Cyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) held a solidarity event for Venezuela as part of the Day of Action for Solidarity proclaimed by the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU). The event is part of international mobilizations to express solidarity with the Venezuelan people and condemn imperialist interventions. PEO General Secretary Sotiroula Charalambous emphasized the escalation of imperialist aggression after the election of Trump and the attempt to control Venezuela's resources, particularly oil. She stressed that solidarity with Venezuela also concerns Cyprus, as the undermining of international law creates risks for all. Vera Polycarpou, head of the International Relations Department of AKEL, analyzed international developments and placed the events in Venezuela within the context of geopolitical and economic competition. US policy was characterized as unpredictable and aggressive, creating tensions within the European Union and NATO. Polycarpou highlighted the growing importance of the Arctic as a field of competition due to melting ice and access to new sea and trade routes. The discussion focused on the need to continue the struggles and internationalist solidarity, as well as to defend international law and international organizations. PEO and AKEL call for resistance to imperialist interventions and the attempt to control the resources of other countries. The event is an expression of the commitment of the class trade union movement to defend the interests of workers and peoples. Overall, the PEO event and AKEL's analysis demonstrate a common concern about the escalation of geopolitical tensions and the threat to international law. Solidarity with Venezuela is presented as an important step in addressing these challenges and defending peace and social justice.
