EP Supports Cyprus, but Prioritizes Transatlantic Strategy

The European Parliament approved a resolution on the EU's external and security policy, which includes references to the Cyprus issue and the Palestinian issue, but emphasizes the transatlantic alliance and military deterrence. The resolution recognizes the independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus, criticizes Turkey for its policies, and calls for a resumption of talks under the auspices of the UN. It also mentions the need to respect the status of the Green Line and the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force. A significant point is the passing of an amendment proposing the appointment of a special envoy for Cyprus by the European Commission. Cypriot MEPs voted differently, depending on their political affiliation.
