AKEL and Irene Charalambidou Officially Part Ways

Published February 11, 2026, 12:45

AKEL Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas stated that the decision to end the partnership with Irene Charalambidou was clear and unavoidable, as the MP repeatedly rejected proposals for continued cooperation and left open the possibility of joining other parties. Mr. Koukoumas emphasized that it is illogical to remain in one party while simultaneously exploring collaborations with others, something Ms. Charalambidou did not rule out publicly. AKEL had proposed continuing the cooperation in a different way, but received no counter-proposal or clear statement of remaining on the left. The process lasted several months, with AKEL giving Ms. Charalambidou time to reconsider the proposal, but to no avail. Mr. Koukoumas stressed that Ms. Charalambidou's stance was neither correct nor tolerable, given her political position.
