Irene Charalambides Accuses AKEL Secretary General of Misrepresentation Regarding Document

Irene Charalambides commented on Stephanos Stephanou's statements regarding a “document” concerning her position on the Pamborides issue, arguing that the AKEL Secretary General answered differently from what he was asked. The MP states that the document concerned her and her “behavior,” that it was presented to base party groups, and that it was the subject of numerous discussions and written letters requesting her withdrawal. According to Ms. Charalambides, the document referred to party procedures, a request for “patience” from Stephanou, and her refusal to appear before the party’s Secretariat, which she found particularly offensive after 11 years of cooperation. Stephanos Stephanou, for his part, denied the existence of the document, expressing the opinion that Ms. Charalambides’ reference relates to the public discussion about the party’s contacts with Giorgos Pamboridis. He emphasized that AKEL had clarified the absence of procedures or decisions in relation to this matter. This dispute arose after Ms. Charalambides’ interview with “Fileleftheros,” where she stated that she had received a document from the Central Committee sent to the base party groups, with instructions to read it verbatim. According to her, the document concerned her behavior and the criticism she received for her statements. Ms. Charalambides has criticized AKEL’s handling of the case, while Mr. Stephanou has denied her accusations, characterizing her references as inaccurate and problematic. The case has caused turmoil in the Cypriot political scene and has raised questions about the relationship between Ms. Charalambides and her party.
