EU Expresses Concern over Alleged Data Transfer from Hungary to Russia

The European Commission has expressed serious concerns regarding claims that Hungary was passing sensitive data to Russia, as reported by the Washington Post. The Commission is requesting clarification from the Hungarian government, emphasizing the importance of trust between EU member states. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán responded by denouncing the wiretapping of Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó's phone calls, who is alleged to have informed his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, about discussions within the EU. The Washington Post reports that Russian intelligence services were planning to influence the upcoming Hungarian elections, while Szijjártó dismissed the claims as conspiracy theories. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented that the information was not surprising, while the leader of the Hungarian opposition, Péter Magyar, spoke of potential high treason. Furthermore, an investigative journalist confirmed that he provided Szijjártó's phone numbers to a state agency of another country.
