EU Considers Deploying 'Aspides' Mission to Strait of Hormuz

EU foreign policy chiefs will discuss today the possibility of deploying the 'Aspides' mission to the Strait of Hormuz to protect navigation. The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, stated that it is in the EU's interest to keep the strait open and they are considering ways to contribute to this. The discussion concerns the potential modification of the 'Aspides' mission's mandate, which currently operates in the Red Sea, to also cover the Strait of Hormuz. However, this requires the consent of member states. President Trump has put pressure on the US and China to send warships to the region. Borrell also mentioned the possibility of creating a “coalition of the willing” or applying common criteria that could be submitted to Iran. France has already proposed a “purely defensive” international mission to open the strait.
