GESY Budget Approved – Innovative Medicines, Software, Abuse and Quality of Services Highlighted by MPs

The Cypriot Parliament unanimously approved the budget of the Health Insurance Organization (GESY) for 2026, amounting to €2.129 billion in revenue and expenditure. During the discussion, MPs emphasized the need for the inclusion of more innovative therapies, strengthening control mechanisms to prevent abuse, and improving the quality of services provided. Issues were also raised regarding the patient referral program abroad, increased waiting times in certain medical specialties, and malfunctions of the GESY information system. MPs called for immediate corrective interventions to address these problems. The largest part of the budget is allocated to the provision of health services, including provider fees, pharmaceutical expenditure, hospitalizations, examinations, and patient referrals abroad. Significant amounts are also allocated to inpatient care, specialist doctors, personal doctors, and other healthcare professionals. In addition to healthcare expenditure, the budget includes expenditure for the salaries of GESY staff, abuse control services, legal and consulting services, communication and information, as well as the operation and support of the information system. The creation of 25 new jobs is also planned.
