Cyprus Parliament Approves Regulations for Chief/Deputy Chief of National Guard Retirement

The Parliament of Cyprus has approved amendments to the National Guard law concerning the retirement of the Chief and Deputy Chief. These changes clarify the mandatory retirement age, which remains 62 for officers holding the rank of Lieutenant General, and the required rank for appointment to these positions. Specifically, a rank of Brigadier General or Lieutenant General is required for the Deputy Chief. The provision for mandatory retirement upon completion of the appointment term has been abolished, so that these issues are regulated comprehensively within the National Guard law. Additionally, the payment of any accrued leave entitlement to the officer appointed as Chief or Deputy Chief is stipulated. These amendments aim to provide clarity and smooth operation of the National Guard. The regulation also applies to officers of the Army of the Republic of Cyprus appointed to these positions. If their term of office expires before the age of 62, they will be compulsorily retired, as already in effect. The legislative initiative aims to harmonize the provisions regarding the Chief and Deputy Chief of the National Guard, transferring the regulatory authority from the Army of the Republic law to the National Guard law. This is achieved by repealing the corresponding provisions from the Army law.
