Inauguration of European Firefighting Hub in Cyprus

Cyprus is inaugurating a new European Firefighting Hub in Paphos, as part of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU and the Informal Summit on April 23-24. The initiative is part of a comprehensive European strategy for managing forest fires, which have increased in intensity and frequency across Europe. The Hub will operate with co-financing from the EU and Cyprus, focusing on training, exchange of best practices, and preparedness for fire response. The new Hub will have a dual role: operational and educational, functioning as a center of excellence for training, exercises, and knowledge sharing. It will strengthen the region's capabilities in addressing fires in the Eastern Mediterranean and promote cooperation with countries in the Southern Neighborhood. The creation of the Hub follows the announcement by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to strengthen European readiness for fires. Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, emphasized the importance of co-financing and cooperation between the EU and Cyprus for the implementation of the Hub. Cyprus will undertake the implementation of the infrastructure, while the EU will contribute to training and the exchange of best practices. This initiative comes at a critical time, as 2023 saw the worst fire season in Europe, with over one million hectares of land burned. The European Commission recognizes that fires pose not only an environmental but also a serious economic threat, and the creation of the Hub in Cyprus is a significant step towards strengthening European preparedness and protecting citizens and the environment.
