Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak Prompts Public Appeal in Cyprus

Following new cases of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock farms in Idalion and Geri, the Mayor of Idalion has appealed to the public to avoid certain roads. Veterinary Services are on alert, as the appearance of the virus in the province of Nicosia creates two new infected zones. All animals from 16 infected units have been culled, totaling approximately 15,000 animals, with another 15,000 awaiting culling. Over 76% of cattle and about 42% of sheep and goats have been vaccinated, with a vaccine for pigs expected to arrive in March or April. Four veterinarians from Slovakia are assisting with sampling and vaccinations. The Cypriot Republic is informing the European Commission about the evolving situation.
