Dramatic Drop in Dam Water Levels in Cyprus

A significant decrease has been recorded in the water levels of dams in Cyprus. According to data from the Water Development Department, the overall dam capacity on February 13th was only 14.1%, compared to 26.0% on the same date last year. This means that the total amount of water in the dams is only 41,080 million cubic meters (MCM), while the total capacity is 290,804 MCM. The small inflow of water into the dams since October 1st, 2023, reaches 19,223 MCM. The situation is particularly worrying in the largest dams in Cyprus: Koummi is 12.6% full (14,499 MCM), Asprokremmos is 12.9% full (6,764 MCM), Evretou is 18.5% full (4,437 MCM), Kannaviou is 16.6% full (2,852 MCM), and Kalavasos is 7.9% full (1,353 MCM). The dramatic reduction in dam water reserves is raising concerns about water sufficiency during the summer and could potentially lead to restrictive measures. This situation highlights the need for prudent management of water resources and the promotion of water conservation. The Water Development Department is closely monitoring the situation and taking measures to address the drought, however, the continued dryness poses a serious challenge to Cyprus and its hydroeconomy.
