Farmers Protest EU-Mercosur Deal, Deliver Petition to von der Leyen

Farmers and organizations held a protest in Nicosia, outside the House of Europe, against the EU-Mercosur agreement. They delivered a petition to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, calling for a review of the agreement and the protection of European farmers. Protesters express concerns about the negative impact of the agreement on European fundamental rights, dependence on imports, and the preference for large industries over small and medium-sized agricultural businesses. Specifically, the petition points out that the agreement does not adequately protect PDO products, such as halloumi, which has not been included in the agreement. In addition, fears are expressed about the quality of imported products due to the use of chemicals prohibited in Europe. Protesters consider the claim that the agreement will benefit consumers to be misleading, as the benefits will be reaped by intermediaries and large chains. The petition is signed by a wide range of organizations, including agricultural unions, consumer organizations, and environmental groups. The protest received the support of political figures, such as the AKEL General Secretary and MEPs of the party. During the event, protesters distributed local products to those present, as a sign of their support for local agriculture. Protesters argue that the EU-Mercosur agreement is contrary to the pursuit of an autonomous Europe, as it increases dependence on third countries. They emphasize the need for a trade policy that protects European farmers and consumers and ensures the quality and safety of food.
