DIPA on Peace Council: Understands Government's Decision – 'Observer Status is the Right Choice'

DIPA expressed its understanding of the government's decision to participate in the Peace Council for Gaza, judging the choice of observer status as correct. The party believes that participation in this capacity constitutes a balanced approach, allowing Cyprus to maintain its presence in an international forum for dialogue without undertaking legal commitments that would conflict with the country's established principles and goals. DIPA emphasized that observer status ensures that Cyprus does not accept the substitution of the functions and role of the United Nations. Cyprus's presence at the Council is considered symbolic and substantial, as it allows for the recording of positions, understanding international trends, and strengthening the country's international presence without compromising its principles. Furthermore, the party stressed the importance of adhering to the provisions of international humanitarian law, respecting the rights of civilians and the unimpeded provision of humanitarian aid. DIPA underlined the need for Cyprus to remain consistent with international law and link its participation in the Council to its longstanding position in favor of the peaceful resolution of disputes. Overall, DIPA believes that participation in the Council for Gaza, under these specific conditions and with absolute commitment to international law, strengthens Cyprus's international presence, promotes peace, and safeguards the rights and principles of the country, taking into account its status as a full member of the EU.
