Sigma Poll: "Parties Pay for Lack of Self-Criticism"

A recent Sigma poll reveals a climate of intense disappointment and anger among Cypriot citizens towards the political system. According to Political Communication Consultant Kostas Daltas, one in two citizens does not feel represented by any of the existing parties, a situation attributed to the failure of parties to engage in honest self-criticism and take responsibility for past mistakes. Mr. Daltas emphasized that instead of apologizing, officials from traditional parties often criticize newer political formations, which he considers ironic. This behavior, combined with past mistakes and tolerance for corruption, has created space for the rise of anti-establishment forces exploiting public anger and populism. The poll also records high levels of negative opinion towards political leaders, a phenomenon not limited to Cyprus but observed in other European countries as well. The widespread disappointment is due to the lack of convincing solutions to citizens' problems and the absence of optimism for the future. Regarding specific individuals, Odysseus Michailidis appears to be recovering in the polls, while Pheidias Panagiotou presents a polarized profile, with a loyal but limited circle of supporters. The potential candidacy of Irene Charalambidou alongside Mr. Michailidis could strengthen the inclusiveness of the effort. However, those forces criticizing corruption should present comprehensive proposals for the economy and the Cyprus issue.
