“No Problem for Halloumi” – Three European Experts Arrive in Cyprus for Foot-and-Mouth Investigation

Three European experts are expected to arrive in Cyprus by Wednesday to examine the situation caused by the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiadou stated that they will discuss the issue with Cypriot authorities and decisions will be made accordingly. Regarding the delay in vaccinating animals, Ms. Georgiadou explained that Cyprus was free from the virus until the appearance of the case within the controlled areas in February and, according to international regulations, does not vaccinate countries that are free from the disease. The process of ordering and shipping vaccines has begun, as well as the implementation of other measures such as spraying at checkpoints and informing farmers. Around half a million vaccines have been ordered, which are expected to be sent soon. Ms. Georgiadou assured that there is no problem for halloumi exports, as certificates have been obtained to allow the continuation of exports. It was pointed out that the Republic of Cyprus does not have control over what is happening in the occupied areas and that the situation changed on February 21, when Cyprus lost its 'free country' status from the virus. However, in discussions with Australia, the continuation of Cypriot product exports, including halloumi, was secured. Vaccines are considered a solution to limit the spread of the virus and protect the animal population, while discussions will also be held about exported products. The government seeks to ensure that exports are not affected by the epidemic.
