EU City Mayors Seek Strategic Partnership Role in Implementing European Priorities

Mayors of cities in the European Union are seeking to strengthen the role of cities as strategic partners in implementing the EU's priorities for the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework and improving the quality of life for citizens. This is outlined in the Nicosia Declaration, which was issued after a dialogue between the mayors and the European Commission. Particular emphasis was placed on the issue of housing, which concerns citizens throughout the EU. The mayors are calling for a strong cohesion policy with an urban dimension, full implementation of partnership and subsidiarity, integration of urban innovation ecosystems, and a clear urban dimension in European funding programs. The Declaration highlights that cities are where competitiveness is generated, innovation is implemented, the green transition is realized, and social cohesion is ensured.
