Georgiou Criticizes Housing Report, Accuses Parties of Protecting Banks

MEP Giorgos Georgiou voted against the report of the special committee on Housing, criticizing its approach which he believes treats housing as a commodity rather than a human right. He emphasized that amendments aimed at protecting borrowers from foreclosures were rejected, revealing the priorities of political groups acting as "bodyguards" for banks and debt collection companies. Specifically, they voted down amendments that would have required courts to automatically examine the abusive nature of contracts and suspend foreclosures, as well as amendments for debt forgiveness in case of primary residence foreclosure and a property tax to fund socially just housing policies. Georgiou highlighted the gap between declarations and the actual will of right-wing and conservative political groups.
