General Strike and Protest in Minnesota Against ICE

A general strike and protest are taking place in Minnesota in response to the deployment of thousands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to the streets of Minneapolis. Dozens of stores and businesses have closed, and schools are offering remote learning options. The protests escalated after the death of Rene Good, who was shot by an ICE agent, with protesters questioning the official account of self-defense. The arrest of 5-year-old Liam Ramos, pictured frightened next to an ICE agent, has sparked outrage. ICE claims the child was taken into custody because his father, an “undocumented immigrant,” attempted to evade arrest. However, the school district reports that the family has applied for asylum and there is no deportation order. In total, over 300 businesses participated in the strike, closing their doors in solidarity. A march in downtown Minneapolis is scheduled for the afternoon, aiming to condemn the deployment of ICE agents, which the mayor and other Democratic politicians are calling an “invasion.” US Vice President J.D. Vance defended ICE’s actions, while the case has triggered a broader discussion about immigration policies and law enforcement tactics.
