AKEL Secretary-General: “Israel is Instrumentalizing Cyprus”

AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou, in an interview with the newspaper “Simerini,” discussed the party's lead in polls, the consolidation of ELAM, the prospect of cooperation with ALMA in the 2028 Presidential elections, developments in the Cyprus issue, and the split with Irini Charalambidou. Mr. Stefanou interpreted AKEL's lead as a sign of confidence, but not as a reason for complacency. He criticized the Government's stance towards Israel and the US, advocating a multi-dimensional foreign policy that would not tie Cyprus to unilateral strategic choices. He believed that Israel is instrumentalizing Cyprus. Analyzing the phenomenon of the rise of new political formations, he emphasized the need for substantial positions and proposals, rather than communicative “soundbites.” Regarding the consolidation of ELAM, he spoke of normalization by the political system and social conditions that fuel the far right. Mr. Stefanou stated that AKEL has a rich history of 100 years and has made significant contributions to Cypriot society. The major challenge for AKEL today is to reaffirm that it is the power of workers and society.
