AKEL General Secretary: State Should Ensure Connectivity with Foreign Markets

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, stated that Cyprus is a safe destination for tourists, but the state must ensure connectivity with foreign markets and intensify the promotion of tourism abroad. During his visit to Paphos Airport, Mr. Stefanou referred to the need to examine the issue of employment in case some tourist units do not operate. He also proposed strengthening programs to support domestic tourism, emphasizing that it should not be neglected except in times of crisis. Regarding the cost of living, Mr. Stefanou reiterated the need to restrain energy prices. AKEL is reintroducing its proposal for a permanent reduction of the VAT rate on electricity from 19% to 5%, the abolition of double taxation on fuels, and the promotion of structural changes to diversify the energy production mix. The party states that it is ready for dialogue, but expresses disappointment with the government's position, which it characterizes as populist. AKEL argues that its proposals are costed and documented, calling on the government not to create obstacles to dialogue and to develop scenarios for all eventualities.
