France: Two Streamers on Trial Following Death During Live Broadcast

Two French streamers, Owen Chenazantoti (Naruto) and Safine Hamadi (Safine), will stand trial in Nice in July 2026 following an investigation into the death of Jean Pormanove (Raphaël Grève) in August 2025. Pormanove died after a 12-day live broadcast on the Kick platform, during which he was subjected to torture and humiliation. Despite initial detention and release, the two streamers were ultimately brought to trial following new evidence. The investigation began after the release of videos showing Pormanove being insulted, hit, having his hair pulled, and being threatened. The autopsy did not reveal a direct cause of death from external violence, however, the charges relate to violence against Pormanove, but also against two other victims, including a minor. The defendants initially assured authorities that the events were staged to attract attention and financial gain. However, the investigation continued and led to their arrest. Simultaneously, the prosecution is seeking arrest warrants for the administrators of the Kick platform, where the controversial broadcasts were hosted. The incident has sparked strong reactions and questions about the responsibility of social media platforms for the content they host and the protection of users from violent and humiliating behavior. The trial is expected to shed light on the circumstances that led to the death of Jean Pormanove and determine the legal responsibilities of those involved.
