France and India Advance Talks for Additional Rafale Fighter Jets

Discussions between France and India regarding the sale of an additional 114 Rafale fighter jets are progressing well, according to sources close to French President Emmanuel Macron, ahead of his official visit to New Delhi. India has already purchased 62 Rafale jets, and the country’s Ministry of Defence has approved the acquisition of additional aircraft as part of a total arms program worth 33 billion euros. Negotiations are focusing on the terms of aircraft manufacturing, with India seeking local assembly. Furthermore, India is interested in purchasing naval versions of the Rafale, specifically designed for aircraft carriers, having already procured 26 such aircraft. The French side is optimistic about reaching a commercial agreement, while the negotiations are considered crucial for strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries. The value of the potential new agreement is expected to be substantial, enhancing Dassault’s presence in the Indian market. Local production will contribute to job creation and technology transfer in India, while the purchase of naval Rafales will boost the country’s naval capabilities. Macron’s visit to New Delhi is considered strategically important, as it is expected to further boost bilateral relations and open new avenues for cooperation in various fields, beyond arms deals.
