Gabriel: Free Famagusta will plant only 1/3 due to severe water shortage

Free Famagusta is expected to plant only one-third of the crops compared to 2023 due to a severe water shortage for irrigation. The president of the parliamentary committee on agriculture, Yannakis Gabriel, pointed out that farmers will not receive any water for irrigation, except those who have private wells with non-salty water. Additionally, there is a problem with the general water supply, as the government was slow to take measures to address the drought, turning to desalination only in 2025. Mr. Gabriel criticized the government for the delay and taking responsibility, emphasizing that mistakes should not be blamed on citizens. He proposed, in addition to desalination, the expansion of small dams to ensure irrigation water. He also expressed his disappointment with the emphasis on water consumption for non-essential uses, such as watering golf courses. The MP stressed that the government serves specific interests, implying that maintaining the irrigation of golf courses is a priority. The lack of water threatens agricultural production and food security in the region, while the delay in government measures exacerbates the situation. The severe water shortage highlights the need for immediate and effective water resource management, as well as the adoption of sustainable irrigation practices. Mr. Gabriel's criticism focuses on the lack of foresight and the prioritization of private interests over the needs of farmers and society.
