G. Laouris: “I am not Fidis’ mentor – Direct Democracy is a necessity”,

Yiannis Laouris, neurophysiologist and researcher, spoke on the “Protoseleido” show about his relationship with Fidis and the vision of Direct Democracy. He clarified that he does not consider himself “Fidis’ mentor,” despite reports to the contrary, but acknowledged a reciprocal relationship of inspiration and appreciation. Their acquaintance arose by chance, through an invitation to a podcast, and Laouris appreciated the way Fidis utilizes technology and sees the world. Mr. Laouris argued that representative democracy has “aged” and no longer substantially represents the people, as power no longer lies with the “demos.” He proposes a return to the principles of Direct Democracy, where citizens have a direct say in the issues that concern them. Regarding the concept of “DNA,” Laouris clarified that he refers to cultural and value continuity, that is, the adoption of the principles and values of the Greek tradition. He believes that Cyprus could serve as a pilot field for new forms of directness due to its small size and the innovative mindset of Cypriots. Direct Democracy, according to Laouris, does not mean daily voting on all issues, but the selection of issues of substantial importance for public discussion and consultation, as is done with Fidis’ model in the European Parliament and “citizens’ assemblies” in other countries. He emphasized the need to cultivate a new way of thinking, with time for consultation, study and mature decision-making.
