Surge in Patient Referrals Abroad Prompts Changes in Cyprus

Patient referrals abroad have seen a rapid increase in Cyprus, reaching over 416 within four months. This surge has led the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) to review its procedures and approval criteria, aiming to improve efficiency and fairness. OSAK emphasizes the need to assess services that can be provided within Cyprus to avoid unnecessary transfers, while also recognizing patients' right to quality and safe care. OSAK representative, Dimitris Lambrianidis, welcomed the HIO's efforts to expedite processes, but also strongly criticized the GESY software, describing it as unreliable and costly. Monica Kyriakou from the HIO acknowledged the software issues and assured that addressing them is a priority. The changes being implemented at the HIO are not aimed at tightening criteria, but at continuously improving the evaluation process. Expenses for referrals abroad are covered by GESY, as they concern services that cannot be adequately provided in Cyprus. Overall, the situation with patient referrals abroad requires coordinated efforts to improve domestic healthcare services, accelerate approval processes, and address the problems of GESY.
